|7.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Chile|
IFSA-Butler is monitoring a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred this evening, approximately 22 miles west of Valparaíso, Chile in the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake and subsequent aftershocks have been felt in Valparaíso and in Santiago. At this time, no structural damage has been reported. A tsunami warning was issued initially, but it was cancelled shortly thereafter.
All IFSA-Butler students in Valparaíso are accounted for and safe, and we are currently verifying the safety of all Santiago students. Our staff in Valparaíso and Santiago will continue to check in on students in the next days, as aftershocks may continue to occur.
We take safety and security seriously. During the mandatory orientation at the beginning of the program, IFSA-Butler resident staff spoke extensively about earthquake safety and what to do should one occur. Additionally, all students were given an emergency phone number to contact resident staff in Chile with any concerns or emergencies.
