Study Abroad Orientation & Excursions in Chile

 

Santiago Programs

Previous orientations and excursions included, but were not limited to:

 Arrival and orientation

  • Airport pick-up for group flight travelers (when a group flight is available)
  • Two-week on-site orientation: includes transportation, accommodation, activities and most meals
  • Welcome meal
  • Introduction to Chilean culture and sightseeing throughout Santiago
  • Discussion of academic differences and expectations
  • IFSA-Butler staff lead sessions on academics, living with a host family, integrating into the host university, safety and security, use of public transportation and cultural differences
  • Transportation to host family

Day trips

  • Valparaíso tour, including muralism, World Heritage walking tour and more
  • Immigration in Chile excursion in Santiago, includes music and dance street festival, cuisine and more
  • Human Rights and Memory excursion in Santiago
  • Vineyard harvest tour and festival in Isla de Maipo (semester 1)
  • Chilean coast excursion and poet Pablo Neruda's Isla Negra home (semester 2)

Excursions

  • Five-day trip to San Pedro de Atacama in southern Chile: includes visits to two indigenous Mapuche communities, one by the Pacific Ocean and the other in the Andes mountains, as well as adventure tourism activities. Check out a student video highlighting this excursion!

  • Please note meals are not included during excursions outside of Santiago

Other activities

  • Cultural activities: theaters, museums, concerts, etc.

Chilean Universities Program, Valparaíso

Previous orientations and excursions included, but were not limited to:

Arrival and orientation

  • Airport pick-up for students who arrive the morning the program starts (see individual program pages for start and end dates)
  • 10-day on-site orientation: includes transportation, accommodation, activities and most meals
  • Program orientation begins in the beautiful resort town of Olmué then finishes in Valparaíso
  • Introduction to Chilean culture and Spanish
  • Discussion of academic differences and expectations; assistance with university course registration
  • IFSA-Butler staff lead sessions on academics, living with a host family, integrating into the host university, health and safety, Chilean culture and more
  • Transportation to host family

Day trips

  • Valparaíso tour
  • Isla Negra and Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda's house/museum (semester 1)
  • Isla de Maipo harvest vineyard tour and pomaire artesans town (semester 1)
  • Isla Negra and Pomaire artesans town (semester 2)
  • Aconcagua Valley rural life traditions (semester 2)
  • Historic Human Rights tour in Santiago

Excursions

  • 4-day trip to southern Chile: Includes visits to indigenous Mapuche communities near the Pacific Ocean and Andean mountains, as well as outdoor activities (semester 1)
  • 4-day trip to the northern city of La Serena and surroundings: Includes visits to astronomical observatories, Gabriela Mistral's museum and a pisco factory in the Valle del Elquí, ancient petroglyphs and historic Andacollo mining town during a colorful religious festival (semester 2)
