Study Abroad in Ecuador

Rehearsing Change is a community-based program that uses the arts for social change as a means toward a greater understanding of our complex world. It is offered in collaboration with the Pachaysana Institute, a small, non-governmental organization based in Quito, Ecuador. Professors are from Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), which also provides transcripts of students' courses.

What Rehearsing Change has to offer

  • Program is based in Quito and the Amazon
  • 8 to 12 international students live in the host community and study/create with their local counterparts
  • Together the students and counterparts form one cohort that studies with highly qualified university professors and professional artists, applying their studies through creative projects that confront global challenges at the local level
  • Curriculum incorporates the arts, social change and sustainability issues
  • Courses are taught by professors from Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ)
  • Organized by teachers, artists and community activists who seek social justice through creative educational programming
  • Any student with an interest in the arts, social change or development may apply to this program
  • Participants come from all academic backgrounds

What is the academic structure of Rehearsing Change?
Participants take four program courses and may also choose an optional independent study. The program also includes field excursions in Quito and the Amazon.

About Universidad San Francisco de Quito
The Universidad San Francisco de Quito is the most distinguished university in Ecuador and one of the top universities in Latin America. USFQ is based on a liberal arts college model and employs many of Ecuador's most renowned scholars and educators. USFQ's international programs include short term, semester and year-long programs at their main campus in Quito, at their Galapagos campus (GAIAS), and at their Tiputini Bio-Divesity Station for research and environmental education in the Amazon

Registration

How will I register for courses?
Registering for courses is not necessary since students take the same program courses. If you are interested in pursuing the independent study option, be sure to notify the Pachaysana Institute before arrival.

Transcripts

How will my home university know what my classes were and what grades I received?
After you return to the U.S., the Pachaysana Institute will send a USFQ transcript to your home university. The transcript reflects the courses taken, as well as the credits grades earned on the program during your study abroad semester.

Housing Options

What are my housing options?
Study abroad is much more than academics. Learning takes place not only during class, but 24 hours a day. One of the best out-of-class experiences is the homestay, which is a vital, required component of the Rehearrsing Change program. One or two students are placed with a carefully selected, program approved host family for the duration of the study abroad semester. Students will live with host families in both Quito and in the Amazon.

The program fee includes three meals per day.

Housing FAQs

Is my housing included in the program fee?
Yes. Your program fee includes accommodation with your host families in Ecudaor.

When will I receive my housing assignment?
You will most likely receive your housing assignment one to two weeks before your departure.

Can I arrange my own housing?
All students who participate on the Rehearsing Change program must live with a program approved host family for the duration of the program.

Your program end date may change due to circumstances beyond IFSA-Butler's control. We also strongly recommend that you investigate fees and penalties associated with your airline tickets in case you need to make date or route changes.

Program housing is available only until the “Program ends” date.
