Jan Kieling was born in Minneapolis, MN, and grew up in a Navy family that moved constantly around the U.S. She happily landed in Northern California at age 17 when her parents moved to Sacramento. She attended UC Berkeley, spent her junior year abroad in Padua, Italy, and graduated with a BA in Journalism. Jan has spent the last 45 years working in study abroad and international higher education.
Her professional career was at UC Berkeley where she retired in 2009 as Administrative Director of Berkeley Programs for Study Abroad. Jan has been a friend and supporter of IFSA from the first IFSA National Advisory Council gathering in Indianapolis in September 1988, the founding year of the Institute. She joined the IFSA Board of Trustees in 2011 and currently serves as Board Secretary. She is also on the Board of Trustees for the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) based in Washington, DC. Jan lives in Oakland, California.
