Academics

The curriculum includes the following two classes:

Enlightenment, Revolution and Romanticism

This class examines the development of Enlightenment thinking and the Romantic response to it through the 18th and 19th centuries with texts selected to emphasize the particular context and contributions of the English and Scots.

Contemporary British Poetry

The United Kingdom today has a diverse population, which is reflected in its vibrant poetry scene. This class surveys the current state of British poetry. It will look at how the tradition of western literature is being used to think about contemporary concerns, and it will keep returning to the question of what it means to be “British” in the 21st century.

Instructor

Both classes will be taught by Antony Lyon, Director of University of California San Diego’s Revelle College Humanities Program. Antony has taught at UCSD since 2010 and teaches all five courses of the humanities sequence and enjoys the program’s multidisciplinary approach to the humanities. He studied political science at UC San Diego and loves Stoicism and contemporary poetry. In recognition of his teaching, he received UC San Diego’s Saltman Distinguished Teaching Award in 2019. He has traveled in the United Kingdom throughout his life, returning frequently to visit family.

You will earn 8 UC San Diego quarter credits for this program.
