Jill McKinney
Butler University

Jill McKinney is the Director of Global Engagement at Butler University. In this position, McKinney is responsible for overseeing the Center for Global Education with serves the institution for both the outbound study abroad programming and the inbound F-1 and J-1 international students. At this time, Butler students can access 200+ programs in 60 countries. More than a third of all Butler University graduates have an abroad experience. As with many institutions, the past few years has seen a rise in the number of customized, faculty-led programs; the CGE partners with faculty to plan nearly 30 such programs each academic year.

McKinney came to Butler in November 2008 from Ball State University where she worked as the Assistant Director of Study Abroad and Exchange Programs. In 20 years as an international educator, McKinney has led groups of students as well as faculty abroad, forged exchange partnerships, contributed to the field through research, participated in site visits and provider assessments overseas, and developed strong international internship programs. McKinney sits on the board of the International Center in Indianapolis and currently serves as the board Treasurer.

McKinney was born and raised in Indiana. She holds a B.A. degree in Communication and German from Anderson University, a M.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Ball State University, and a M.S.Ed. in Effective Teaching and Leadership from Butler University. Her scholarly work centers on the gender breakdown of study abroad participation in outbound U.S. students.

Jill lives in Pendleton, Indiana with her spouse Brad (who is an instructional designer at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum), their two children, Grace and Evan, as well as their 10-pound Maltipoo named Luna.
