February 13, 2021

IFSA is proud to announce a new addition to our lineup of scholarships and grants: the Minority Serving Institution Grant. In keeping with IFSA’s organizational mission, vision, and commitments, this grant emphasizes our strong belief that studying abroad should be accessible for all students. Available beginning in Fall 2021, qualifying students will receive an automatic award of $2,000 applicable toward any in-person IFSA semester or year-long program.

IFSA Minority Serving Institution Grant FAQs

What is a Minority Serving Institution (MSI)?

MSIs are higher education institutions that serve a significant population of minority students, as identified by the U.S. State Department. MSIs include Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and Asian American and Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AAPISIs), among others. See a list of recognized MSIs here.

Who is eligible for the IFSA MSI Grant?

Any student who attends a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) is eligible for the grant. The grant can be applied to any in-person IFSA program for the semester or year.

How do I apply and how does the grant work?

The $2,000 grant will automatically be applied to eligible students’ IFSA account when they begin an IFSA application. There is no additional application process for the grant. The MSI Grant cannot be combined with the IFSA State School Grant, but can be awarded along with any other IFSA scholarship opportunities. Students can begin an IFSA application for the semester or year program of their choice to get started.

How many times can I receive the IFSA MSI Grant?

Students are eligible to receive the MSI Grant for each semester or academic year IFSA program that they attend.

I don’t qualify. Does IFSA offer other scholarships and grants?

Yes! We offer a variety of funding opportunities including a State School Grant, Work-to-Study options, general scholarships, and more. See all of IFSA’s study abroad scholarships and financial aid offerings.

I have additional questions about the IFSA MSI Grant. Where do I go?

Institutional partners can reach out to their IFSA field director to discuss the grant and any questions. Students who have active IFSA applications can reach out to their IFSA program advisor, and students without an application can send an inquiry to studyabroad@ifsa-butler.org.
