Levester (LJ) Johnson, Ed.D.
Biography
Dr. Levester “LJ” Johnson joined Illinois State University in 2016 as vice president for the Division of Student Affairs. He began his career at Butler University as assistant dean of students and associate dean of student affairs, ultimately serving as Vice President for Student Affairs. He was responsible for overseeing Butler’s residence life and dining services, programs for leadership and service education, diversity programs, the university’s health and counseling services, recreation programs, Greek life, campus ministries, student conduct, and Title IX.
LJ is a career student affairs professional, having served as president of NASPA, which honored him with their Pillar of the Profession award. He has also been recognized throughout higher education for his innovative and effective use of social media, and he often speaks on the topic of engaging campus communities through social media.
A native of Milwaukee, WI, LJ holds a B.A. degree in broadcast communications from Marquette University, a M.S. degree in college student personnel from Southern Illinois University, and an Ed.D. degree in higher education administration from Indiana University. LJ has been closely involved with IFSA at key points in his tenure at Butler and will bring strong expertise in student engagement and trends to the Board.
