DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

FUNDS THAT EXPAND OPPORTUNITY

One in every three IFSA applicants benefits from a range of study abroad scholarships that award a total of $1M each year.

ENRICHED ACADEMICS

Raising awareness of identity, power, and privilege and giving students tools to collaborate with people from other cultures is woven into all of our newest classes, like the core course for Life Science Career Accelerator in London.

THE FIRST OF FOUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Since 2016, we’ve woven Inclusive Excellence through everything we do. It shapes how we develop programs, connect with students, plan orientations, and much more.

Inclusion is a centerpiece — Not an Afterthought

Our DEI efforts are more robust than ever, yet they’ve always been a cornerstone of meaningful learning experiences for our students—one and all.

YOU BELONG HERE INITIATIVE

  • Expanded educational approaches, content, and assessment measures to ensure students get a deeper understanding of inclusion, locally and globally.
  • Established belonging  as a measure of success for inclusive programs.
  • Launched a working group to improve inclusivity in employment policies, hiring practices, and organizational culture.
  • Explored power, privilege, and marginalization in the U.S. with staff-led Dialogues on Difference sessions.

INCLUSIVE EXPERTISE

For 20+ years, President & CEO Heather Barclay Hamir, Ph.D., has opened doors to international education for students of every background, and created programs that welcome and value all. She has co-edited two books on this topic, including A House Where All Belong: Redesigning Education Abroad for Inclusive Excellence (forthcoming).

It’s Not just about getting you There

Our inclusive focus enhances your education at every step. Welcoming a wide range of students is just the start. We dig into what it means to deeply explore a new culture from every perspective—including yours. Here’s how we build that journey for you:

FOCUSING ON YOUR STRENGTHS

By getting to know you and your goals, we help you find the right program and prepare for it, maximizing growth and discovery.

INCREASING AFFORDABILITY

Lower-priced program options and scholarship awards for 33% of our applicants put study abroad in reach for more students.

SIMPLIFYING THE SEARCH

Our Global Wayfinder tool makes it easy to find your best-fit program, based on who you are and what’s important to you.

HOSTING D&I WORKSHOPS

Tailored to your location, these innovative sessions provide key insights and perspective to help you navigate, understand, and connect with local people.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX

Our innovative first-generation scholarship and mentorship program was an industry first, creating work-study opportunities that provide stipends plus guidance and resume-worthy experience.

CREATING AFFINITY GROUPS

Join a group based on your beliefs, identity, or background, designed to build camaraderie and foster growth. In spring 2022, we’ll officially roll out this IFSA practice.

SHARING AUTHENTIC VOICES

By helping a range of students capture and share their journeys on our Unpacked page, we’ve collected a wealth of insights to help you choose your program—and make the most of it.
