AN ADVENTURE IN HISTORY WITH UC SAN DIEGO 20TH-CENTURY SPECIALIST, PATRICK PATTERSON, PH.D.
London is a site of extraordinary cultural and historical importance. Explore the roles London and Great Britain played in forming modern society in an age of war and peacemaking, democracy and dictatorship, economic decline and expansion, and globalization. Plus, dig into why tourism matters today, and discover London’s role as a unique magnet for travelers from around the world.
This global seminar program is offered in partnership with the University of California San Diego. Enrollment is limited to 25 students.

The Contemporary Era: Conflict and Aspirations in a Globalized World, 20th-21st Century
Students will learn about the UK’s great significance in world history covering roughly 1900 to the present. Syllabus coming soon!
Sun, Sea, Sand, and Sex: Tourism and Tourists in the Contemporary World
This class draws continually on the city’s contemporary experience as a place where historical legacies and local culture are preserved for—and marketed very, very successfully to—vast numbers of foreign and domestic visitors. Students will experience some of the most important touristic sites for domestic and international travelers to understand the vitality of history and culture in modern Britain and in the modern world. Instructor
Patrick Patterson, Ph.D., has been teaching at UC San Diego since 2001, first for the Making of the Modern World program at Eleanor Roosevelt College, and more recently as a member of the History Department. His research focuses on the history of 20th-century Eastern Europe and the Balkans, with major emphases on everyday life and consumer culture and on the interplay of Islam, Christianity, and secular society. He teaches courses on everyday life under authoritarian rule, Islam and immigration in contemporary Europe, Americanization and anti-Americanism, law and religion, and the international law of war crimes and genocide. He received his doctorate in History from the University of Michigan, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia, and an Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Princeton University.
You will earn 8 UC San Diego quarter credits for this program.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Eligibility
- You must be at least 18 years of age. Students under 18 may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
- You must be currently attending or recently graduated from a U.S. or Canadian community college, technical college, two-year college, four-year college, or four-year university.
- You must have completed at least one (1) full-time year of study at your home institution before the beginning of the term.
Recommendation Letter
Not required.

Excursions
- Day trips to Oxford and Cambridge.
- Boat trip to Greenwich with a tour of the Royal Observatory and free time to explore the Cutty Sark and National Maritime Museum.
- Overnight trip to Salisbury, Stonehenge, and Bath including guided tours of Salisbury Cathedral, Roman Baths, and Bath Abbey.

Housing & Meals
Students will be housed in a furnished student apartment in Central London. Apartments will have single rooms with an ensuite bathroom and access to a shared kitchen and communal areas. Internet access is included. There is no meal plan. You will purchase your meals or cook for yourself. However, a welcome dinner and farewell dinner are provided.
Transportation
Students will receive an Oyster Card for Zones 1 and 2 valid on the London Underground for the duration of the program.
