“I was 10 years old when I met someone from another country for the first time —and that sparked an obsession with learning about other cultures, languages, and countries that hasn’t gone away. While the internet is amazing at letting you connect with people and places on the other side of the world —there’s nothing quite like standing someplace unknown that over time, becomes a home away from home. I love helping students experience that for themselves.”
Education
Karolyn has a bachelor’s degree in political science from St. Mary’s College, with a minor in international peace studies from the University of Notre Dame, and a master’s in business leadership degree from William Penn University in Iowa.
Travel Experience
Karolyn participated in a sister city exchange program to Hofu, Japan, for a summer during high school summer. As an undergraduate, she studied abroad in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. As a graduate student, she created and co-led a custom program to Rwanda and Tanzania. Karolyn has worked in several college student serving roles, including transfer admissions counselor, international student advisor, and as a study abroad advisor prior to working for IFSA.
Did You Know?
Karolyn’s family hosted international exchange students while she was growing up and it’s something she is looking forward to her own family doing once her toddlers are a bit older.
