Headshot of Scott Wilson

Biography

Scott Wilson serves as the Acting Provost at Sewanee: The University of the South. He graduated from Oberlin College with highest honors in Government, and took his Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University.

Beginning in 1985 when he studied for one semester at Nanjing University, he has lived and researched in China for a total of over six years. His research has focused on Chinese development, beginning with a study on the effects of industrialization on village level social life. His later work has addressed issues of globalization in China, from foreign direct investment and labor relation to China’s AIDS and environmental social movements, which has resulted in two books, Remade in China: Foreign Investment and Institutional Change in China (Oxford University Press, 2009) and Tigers Without Teeth: The Pursuit of Justice in Contemporary China (Rowman and Littlefield, 2015), as well as several journal articles and book chapters.

During the year 2014-15, Wilson researched Chinese environmental policy and citizen participation at Wuhan University’s Environmental Law Institute with the support of a Fulbright Research Award. In 2016, he was appointed Associate Dean for Global Citizenship at The University of the South, in Tennessee, to advise students on study abroad programs in other parts of the world, to oversee hosting of international students at the University, to develop international partnerships, and direct the University’s global engagement programs.
