Bomb at Shanghai Airport

June 14, 2016

On June 12, an individual detonated a homemade explosive device at a baggage counter at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport before pulling out a knife and attempting to commit suicide. Four bystanders were injured and the event caused delays to a small number of flights. Early indications suggest that the incident is related to individual mental health issues, and there does not appear to be a broader political or terrorism motives.

The Alliance for Global Education summer program in Shanghai begins on June 15. Our resident director in Shanghai has confirmed that two spring students awaiting the start of the summer program have been located and are accounted for as of this morning.

The Alliance for Global Education takes student safety and security very seriously. A dedicated team of individuals regularly monitors news reports, assesses current security conditions in all Alliance and IFSA-Butler program locations and surrounding areas, as well as responds to emergencies and critical incidents that may happen during the course of a program. Additionally, the program orientation includes several discussions on safety and security. Our students can contact our resident director in Shanghai 24/7 at an emergency number given to them during the orientation.

We will continue to monitor this situation and provide any relevant updates. More information can be found here:

Please contact Eryn Espín-Kudzinski, Director of Health, Safety and Security with any questions or concerns.

Bus Fire in Jerusalem

April 18, 2016

A bus fire in South Jerusalem has injured at least 15 people. According to initial reports, an explosion took place on empty bus, which set fire to an adjacent bus filled with passengers. The cause of the explosion is now being investigated.

Our resident director in Israel, Monica Wasserbach, reported that all IFSA-Butler students are accounted for. Since it is holiday break, all but one student is traveling outside of Jerusalem. Before departing on travels, Monica provided students with further safety instructions for traveling, as well as the emergency phone number to contact IFSA-Butler if needed.
