Before You Fly: Be Prepared for Heightened Security

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has stepped up questioning and screening of travelers entering the United States from all parts of the world. This can apply to all students who have been abroad, not just those who do not hold U.S. passports. As we continue to monitor this situation, we strongly recommend that you prepare for the possibility of additional questioning at the airport.

Please stay in touch with your home college or university’s study abroad advisors—they know your school’s policies on this issue. In addition, use the resources below to learn more:

  • ACLU: Know Your Rights, Enforcement at the Airport. Reviews a range of scenarios to answer commonly asked questions. Available in ten languages. Go to site.
  • U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Traveling as an International Student. Guidance for international students who attend colleges or universities in the U.S. and will return to the U.S. after studying abroad. Includes a list of required documents and forms. Go to site.
