  5. I Belong Here: A First-Generation Experience Abroad

When I first got to Galway, I was so nervous. I kept asking myself, can I really do this? I come from a family of Ethiopian immigrants. As a first-generation student, studying abroad felt impossible. Traveling wasn’t a regular thing for us growing up. Every summer, my friends would come back with stories of all their trips and all I could recall were the countless hours I clocked at my job.

This trip to Ireland was different—it was my first time traveling alone.

Uncertain to unforgettable

Before the trip began, I worried about how I would be perceived. As a Black girl with huge curly hair, I knew I would stand out. I hate the feeling of having eyes on me. Would I feel out of place?

To my surprise, the Irish locals were inviting and kind. I was stopped constantly and complimented on my curls! They were so excited to teach us about Irish culture—and eager to learn about mine. Not only did I feel welcomed, I felt seen.

Our little kitchen

I think one of the best parts of the trip was how independent I became. Cooking meals for myself and sharing meals with my roommates is one of my fondest memories. After a long day of class and field research, we’d gather in our apartment and reminisce about the day over a delicious meal.

Who knew within a couple of weeks, these girls who started out as strangers would become some of the greatest people I’ve met?

Paving the way

This whole trip was filled with many firsts. Did I make mistakes? Definitely! But I asked questions and kept learning. I realized how capable I am. Not only was I growing in Ireland. I was thriving!

You can be first, too!

If you’re thinking about studying abroad, do it. You don’t have to have all the information or experience. Know that you will learn along the way and meet amazing people. You just need to take that first leap, because you belong here, too.

Ireland changed me for the better and unlocked something important within me. I can’t wait to experience the rest of the world.
