Applying to the University of Oxford program FAQs

Considering studying abroad at the University of Oxford with IFSA? This FAQ page covers everything you need to know about the application process, including deadlines, college selection, subject availability, academic statements, writing samples, and how tutorials work. Use this resource to prepare a strong application and connect with an Enrollment Counselor for personalized support.

1. When is the application deadline?

December 15th, visit the University of Oxford Partnership program page for more details.

2. The subject I want to study isn’t listed. Can I still apply to that college?

It depends. The college you’re interested in must offer the general subject area (i.e., Mathematics, Philosophy, etc.). If your exact topic isn’t listed, you may still be able to apply. This varies by college. For example, St. Catherine’s College allows students to propose their own tutorial topic, even if it’s not on their published course list. Check the Class Restrictions section on the University of Oxford Partnership program page for the most up-to-date guidance.

3. Do I have to choose a specific Oxford college, or can I apply to Oxford generally?

You must select one specific Oxford college when applying. To help determine the best fit, schedule an advising call with Enrollment Counselor Kristen Clark or Kevin Cañas.

4. Can I apply to more than one Oxford college to increase my chances of acceptance?

No. You may apply to only one Oxford college. You cannot submit a back-up application to a second college.

5. I am a STEM Major, what sort of writing samples should I select?

Oxford prefers writing samples that reflect the subject you intend to study. For STEM majors, appropriate samples include:

  • Research papers
  • Problem sets or mathematical proofs
  • Exams with detailed, shown work
  • Any relevant coursework that includes professor feedback

6. I am double majoring; can I take two different subjects at Oxford?

Yes. Oxford’s tutorial system includes:

  • One primary tutorial (worth 8 U.S. credits)
  • One secondary tutorial (worth 4 U.S. credits)

These can be in different subject areas. To strengthen your application, explain how the two fields intersect in your academic statement. Acceptance into both subjects will be confirmed in your offer letter.

7. What should I include in my academic statement?

A good approach to follow is the past, present, and future model.

  • Past: Why are you interested in your selected area of study? What relevant academic experience have you had?
  • Present: What you hope to gain from the University of Oxford specifically to deepen your knowledge in this topic.
  • Future: How will your time at Oxford support your long-term goals (i.e., graduate school, career plans)?

8. How do tutorials work?

Great question! Check out this video to learn more: Oxford Tutorial System

9. I only want to study at Oxford for one semester. Is that possible?

Yes, but please note that acceptance rates are much higher for full academic year applicants. IFSA strongly recommends applying for the full year or selecting a back-up study abroad program if you can only attend one semester.

10. How can I change my application to a different Oxford college?

To request a change, please email admissions@ifsa-butler.org with the name of the Oxford college you wish to switch your application to as early as possible.
