Just Say ‘Yes!’
Once upon a time (well, just three months ago), I was a shy, overly cautious girl my friends used to tease for being laser-focused on my career path. I meticulously planned my life around things that aligned with my interests, waving away anything that seemed even remotely off-topic. It was as if I had a detailed plan for each day and wouldn’t accept anything less than completing it.
Well, let me tell you, Australia turned my world completely upside down.
Picture this: I arrived in Australia with my trusty checklist of interests and career-focused pursuits. But something deep inside me started to yearn for more. I suddenly wanted to break out of my comfort zone and explore. So, I ended up making a pact with myself to say “yes” to every opportunity that came my way, no matter how diverse or unconventional it seemed.
Soon after, I found myself joining an astronomy club at my local university. I had no idea how to spot a single constellation. But as the weeks went by, I camped under the stars in Australia’s countryside, made valuable connections with students from all around the world and became so infatuated with the night sky, I could now give you an astronomy talk at any time of the day.
From there, it was a cascade of adventures: I found myself immersed in Japanese cooking classes, where I crafted mouthwatering dishes under the guidance of talented local chefs. Another day, I danced to the unfamiliar rhythms of salsa in the heart of the street, as part of an initiative celebrating Brisbane’s Spanish heritage. The contagious energy and laughter shared with the community created memories that will forever bring a smile to my face.
But wait, there’s more! While on a trip organized by IFSA and through local art exhibitions, I had the incredible privilege of immersing myself in the wide array of Aboriginal traditions and art. I listened intently as elders shared stories passed down through generations, learning to appreciate the intricate patterns and symbols that adorned their artwork, each stroke telling a profound story of connection to the Australian Land.
And finally, let’s not forget the breathtaking landscapes of Australia that became my playground for adventure. Sunrise mountain hikes, rainforest excursions with IFSA and long runs at the beach were now a part of my new everyday reality.
Looking back at those experiences, I can’t help but smile at the transformation I underwent in those few months. I basically discovered a world beyond my own, a world brimming with diverse cultures, flavors, and perspectives.
And you know what? It was the best decision I ever made. So, let me tell you this: If you ever find yourself at a crossroads, wondering whether to stick to the safe and familiar or take a leap into the unknown, remember the power of saying “yes.” Embrace diversity, try new things, and let the magic unfold. Studying abroad has changed my life, and it can change yours too. Just say “yes” and let the adventure begin!
