STRONG ACADEMICS IN THE CITY THAT’S AUSTRALIA’S BEST-KEPT SECRET

Hop off Australia’s beaten path and get to know an affordable, livable city, 10 miles from the coast. Located in the center of the city on a leafy, riverside campus, the university is known for a broad STEM selection. It is consistently highly ranked for computer science, physical sciences, and more, and collaborates with industry and the national government on research. Tours to places like the lush Barrossa Valley and the stunning coastline along the Great Ocean Road take you beyond the city to get to know more of Australia’s unique landscapes

Australian Government | Department of Education | CRICOS: 00123M
Australian Government | Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency | TEQSA: PRV12105

You may enroll in undergraduate courses for which you are qualified and in which space is available. Course descriptions in the online course catalog (see above) include prerequisites you must fulfill in order to enroll in each course.
For each course that you list on your preference form, be sure to check the following:

  • When determining which courses to take, please bear in mind that the Australian academic system is an intensive, three-year program.
  • First-year (1000-level) courses are appropriate for departments in which you have little or no prior experience.
  • Second-year (2000-level) courses will be equivalent to advanced sophomore or junior-level U.S. courses.
  • Third-year (3000-level) courses will be equivalent to senior-level U.S. courses.
  • Fourth-year (4000-level) courses and higher are part of a postgraduate degree (Masters or Ph.D.). You are not eligible to take these courses as an undergraduate study abroad student. 6. Remember, in Australia, U.S. fall semester = semester 2 and U.S. spring semester = semester 1. Be sure to select courses for the correct semester you are studying abroad.

INTERNSHIP
You can gain practical experience in addition to your classes at the University of Adelaide with an internship. Various internships are available at placements in businesses, nonprofit organizations, government offices, and community volunteer centers in Adelaide. Internships are worth the equivalent of 4 U.S. semester credit hours, which you may take in place of one elective class.

Eligibility for an internship placement is dependent on a variety of factors including but not limited to, requirements set by the host organization, your knowledge and interests, and project availability by organization. Students are required to demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment during the internship process and must present the Internships Office with a professional resume and transcript. GPA may be also considered as part of the internship placement selection, however it is not a determining factor. Internships should be organized after admission to the university but prior to arrival. To learn more, visit the University of Adelaide Student Internships website.

Excursions

Activities and excursions are designed to pull you into the communities you visit and encourage cultural connections of every kind. There’s no extra fee to participate in these optional outings—everything is included in your program fee.

Below are examples from previous terms; outings may be different for your program. We’ll make every effort to run them all, but sometimes things we can’t control, such as local regulations and health protocols, get in the way. As result, we cannot guarantee activities and excursions.

Activities

  • Adelaide City Food and Street Art Discovery Tour: Adelaide, often named one of the world’s most livable cities, features exciting food markets, seasonal festivals, and graffiti lanes that keep the city vibrant. Discover all that downtown has to offer during this tour, including the Adelaide Central Market known for the best produce in Australia and tastings including artisan cheeses, bush tucker, and fresh seasonal produce.
  • Victor Harbor Tour: Victor Harbor is a beautiful coastal town away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Adelaide. Stunning beaches and historic architecture make this town an insightful place to visit, with attractions including an alpaca farm, a horse-drawn tram, and a Seal Island tour.
  • NACE Competencies Workshop: Mastering the eight U.S. National Association of Colleges and Employers competencies is essential preparation for college graduates. This IFSA staff workshop helps you make meaningful links between your study abroad experience and career readiness.
  • Farewell Dinner: Savor the memories and experiences of your time in Australia during a final delicious dining experience with your IFSA family.
Excursions
  • Great Ocean Road Adventure: Adelaide students are invited to join the Melbourne-based students on this weekend getaway. Travel to the beautiful coastal town of Anglesea—gateway to the 150-mile-long Australian National Heritage Site—for an unforgettable overnight trip. Stay at an eco-resort and enjoy nocturnal animal spotting, coastal hikes, and fossil hunting on this stunning coast.
  • AFL Match: Australian football, created by Australian cricket players to stay fit during winter, is Australia’s most popular sport. Before the excursion, you’ll get to know Australian Football League culture and rules—and learn the local team song, sung by the victorious team and its fans at the end of every game.
  • Barossa Valley Day Trip: The Barossa Valley is famous for its fertile vineyards and traditional wineries. The tour includes visits to beautiful wineries, the historical town of Hahndorf with its original German-style architecture, and a traditional mettwurst sausage and Barossa cheese tasting.
