  5. How Edinburgh Art Influenced My Study Abroad Experience

As a history and art history double major, one of the highlights of my time in Edinburgh was immersing myself in the city’s deeply rooted arts scene. Engaging with a new cultural landscape sharpened my perspective and deepened my commitment to pursuing a career in museum work and public history.

Rethinking my U.S.-based assumptions

Unsurprisingly, my favorite course this semester was a history of art survey focused on avant-garde movements from the early 20th century to the present. Through lectures and readings, I found myself especially drawn to abstract expressionism, performance art, and contemporary Scottish art. These movements challenged my assumptions from art history classes at home and expanded how I think about artistic styles in a global context.

Lessons from volunteering at a gallery

Beyond the classroom, I had an opportunity to volunteer at the Talbot Rice Gallery, the University’s contemporary art gallery. It was incredibly rewarding to continue the kind of work I love, engaging the public in thoughtful conversations about art. Each interaction offered a new perspective, and I valued the chance to connect with visitors from a wide range of backgrounds. What stood out most was the gallery’s strong commitment to accessibility, both in its research and its approach to visitor engagement. I hope to carry this model forward into my work back home.

Ideas expressed in new ways

Some of the most meaningful experiences took place during my solo visits to the city’s many museums and galleries. Whether I was exploring local history at the Museum of Edinburgh or encountering contemporary works at the Royal Scottish Academy, I was continually inspired by the richness and diversity of the city’s cultural offerings. Seeing how contemporary Scottish artists engage with and reinterpret ideas I had previously encountered in an American context revealed how art is both universal and deeply shaped by individual places.

My study abroad experience was nothing short of inspiring. If you keep an open mind and go where your curiosity takes you, Edinburgh has endless opportunities for arts immersion and cultural learning. Whether you are a fellow art history student or just appreciate beauty, the arts scene in Edinburgh has something for you.
