Every Moment Is an Opportunity to Grow: Lessons from Study Abroad in Buenos Aires

When I arrived in Buenos Aires, I knew I was stepping into a new chapter of my life. I felt a lot at once: excited, nervous, and unsure of what to expect. Before arriving, I studied Spanish every day, but living in a new country showed me that learning a language and understanding a culture goes far beyond grammar and vocabulary.  

Small moments and soccer connections 

During my time abroad, I learned that growth happens in the small moments, not always in the big, unforgettable experiences. Speaking with Uber drivers, ordering food, and joining activities with locals pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me gain confidence in my Spanish skills and in myself.  

One of the most meaningful experiences I had was joining a local women’s soccer team in Buenos Aires. At first, I was nervous about stepping into a new environment where I did not know anyone and all communication happened in Spanish. However, through practices, conversations, and shared experiences with my teammates, I was able to build connections with local women and become more comfortable expressing myself.  

Sometimes I didn’t understand directions or jokes and had to ask clarifying questions, but every moment was an opportunity to immerse myself in Argentine culture, form friendships, and challenge myself to participate even when I felt uncertain. In these small, everyday moments, I found myself growing and learning how to navigate life in another language. 

Take the win 

Learning a new language is hard. Using it in real life is even harder. I learned to be more patient with myself and recognize how much I had improved and how much more confident I had become. I believe it’s important to recognize your achievements.  

Studying and living in another country forces you to grow. My experience in Buenos Aires, pushed me to challenge myself in ways I never expected. There were moments when I felt uncomfortable or unsure, but those were often when I learned the most about myself. Each challenge became an opportunity to become more independent, more confident, and more open-minded. 

Put yourself out there 

I learned two important lessons in Argentina. One, don’t wait until you feel completely ready to take a chance. I lived by the phrase, “Fortune favors the bold,” stepping outside of my comfort zone, embracing uncertainty, and trusting myself, even when I did not have all the answers. 

Two, growth is not linear. There were days when I felt ready to conquer the world and others when even the smallest tasks felt overwhelming. Both were part of the journey. Growth comes from trying, making mistakes, adapting, and learning along the way. Whether it was practicing Spanish with locals, exploring different neighborhoods, experiencing Argentine traditions, or building relationships with people from different backgrounds, every experience helped shape who I am today. 

My advice for your study abroad journey is simple: Don’t be afraid of failure. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and ask questions. Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself. Embrace every moment and opportunity you can. So many incredible experiences await you!
