The curriculum includes the following two classes:

Renaissance, Reformation, and Early Modern Europe
This course examines the dynamic transformation of Western culture across three centuries of social, religious, political, and commercial change. We begin in the Renaissance and the revival of classical learning and values. Then we look at the intellectual and political consequence of the age of Global Convergence, the Protestant Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution. Throughout the course we will pay special attention to the development of new forms of cultural expression in art, literature, and philosophy. At the same time, through a close examination of critical texts we will consider emerging conceptions of selfhood, society, nature, and God.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the United States and Europe: Multiple Multiculturalisms
This class will explore, through a historical perspective, how government policy in the United States has variously fostered or hindered the inclusion of members of diverse groups in American society and determined the outcome of efforts to define and promote social equity. It will set the U.S. case in a larger comparative context by exploring the differences between American policy and the multiculturalist policies pursued by various European states and by the Canadian government. Students will be familiarized with the main lines of contemporary debates in the U.S. and abroad about key policies oriented toward concerns of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Instructor
Patrick Patterson, Ph.D., has been teaching at UC San Diego since 2001, first for the Making of the Modern World program at Eleanor Roosevelt College, and more recently as a member of the History Department. His research focuses on the history of 20th-century Eastern Europe and the Balkans, with major emphases on everyday life and consumer culture and on the interplay of Islam, Christianity, and secular society. He teaches courses on everyday life under authoritarian rule, Islam and immigration in contemporary Europe, Americanization and anti-Americanism, law and religion, and the international law of war crimes and genocide. He earned his doctorate in history from the University of Michigan, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia, and an Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Princeton University.

You will earn 8 UC San Diego quarter credits for this program.

Eligibility

• You must be at least 18 years of age. Students under 18 may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
• You must be currently attending or recently graduated from a U.S. or Canadian community college, technical college, two-year college, four-year college, or four-year university.
• You must have completed at least one (1) full-time year of study at your home institution before the beginning of the term.

Recommendation Letter
Not required.
